Backing is when you take a bet - for example if I where to offer you a bet at 2 / 1, you would bet say £100 and if you won take a total of £300 back - your original £100 plus £200 profit. You are the backer as you have taken the bet from me.

What is Laying?

If you where to offer the bet to me at the same price - 2 / 1 and I won you would have to pay me a total of £200 out of your pocket, I would get my £100 back plus the £200 I won from you.

If You layed me a price of 2 /1 and I lost, I would pay you £100, as you are giving the bet and you win, you take my stake.
