Introduction: What is Omaha poker.
Omaha poker also known as Omaha holdem is a community card game and one of many variations of the poker game. The idea of the game is to make the best five card hand you can from the cards available to you, this is the cards you are given plus the community cards.

It is very similar to the popular game Texas holdem apart from a few small changes in the game play. The game can be played with any standard deck of 52 cards and anywhere between 2 to 10 players.

The main difference between Omaha and Texas holdem is that when playing Omaha poker you are dealt out four cards personal at the start of the game instead of just two. However you are only permitted to use two of the four cards plus any three of the five community cards.

The game play:
The game starts with the player to the left of the dealer posting a small blind bet, the player next to that then posts a big blind bet. The cards are then dealt out before the betting starts - four face down cards to each player. Once all the cards have been dealt out the action starts with the player to the left of the big blind, players may bet, raise or fold their cards at this stage.

After betting has stopped the three community cards are then dealt out for everyone to see, in poker terminology this is called the flop. The players can now adjust to the situation and a second round of betting starts. If no one places a bet then players have the option to check, fold or bet. If a bet has already been placed players can choose to call, raise or fold.

Once the betting is over a fourth communal card is dealt out before betting starts again, In poker this card is known as “the turn” card. Once again when betting players have the options to check, raise, call or fold.

Finally the last community card is dealt out, known as the “river card”. Then there is a final round of betting. Once the betting is over the player with the best five-card poker hand wins. The position of the dealer then moves one place to its left and the whole process is started all over again.

I love to play cards for money, especially games such as poker and bragg. If I am on a card table of six players, I always hope that at least three of the players are what I have described above as conservative players. I myself try to play a mixed game of conservative and aggressive, sometimes playing blind for a few hands and sometimes taking a look at my cards at the first chance. In this way I attempt to make it difficult for my opponents to assess how I play.

As a rule, when a conservative player has a look at his/her cards and then bets, this tells me that they must have a fairly good hand. I then will take a look at my cards and will then decide whether to bet or to throw the cards away. What happens quite a lot of the time is that the conservative players all look at their cards and then throw them away. This leaves me playing with two aggressive players and I will then bet blind with them for a few rounds hoping that one of them will eventually take a look at their cards. I of course want this player to fold, if they do I will then take a look at my own cards and bet even if I have only a king or ace high hand. In bragg there are a lot more rubbish hands than good. With only two players ace high is actually quite a good hand.

It is important not to let these over aggressive players bully you as this is what they want. Deal with them as in how you should deal with a bully in every day life, stand up to them as most of them are cowards at the end of the day. Good luck and enjoy your bragg. Fixed-Limit Omaha hi-lo is a game of multiple draws, outs and constant evaluation of pot-odds. In low-limit games in particular, it is common to see a flop with 4 to 6 players, meaning that you will need a ‘nut hand’ to win either the high or low side of the pot.

With pre-flop standards so loose it can be difficult to determine the best (most profitable) time to raise before the flop in small buy-in Omaha Hi-Lo poker. This article examines some common scenarios to help you increase your Omaha Hi-Lo winnings today.

There are 2 main reasons to raise before the flop in Fixed-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo. Either for ‘value’ or to thin the field. Value raises are made when you think you have the best hand and would like to get as much money into the pot as possible. ‘Thinning’ raises are made when you have a hand that can be played profitably against a small number of opponents but not in a multi-way limped pot.

Value raises can be made with extra strong hands such as A-A-2-3 double suited or even A-2-3-K double suited. These hands have strength in multi-way pots as they are likely to make nut hands, both on the low and high sides and possibly both.

It is important to consider your objective when raising before the flop with these type of hands. Conversely you may find yourself in late position (or even in the blinds) and see several limpers ahead. Now is a good time to raise for value since it is far less likely your opponents will fold having committed a bet to the pot already.

Some hands such as A-2-K-K play better against just a few opponents. The high-pair may be enough to win the high side of the pot and opponents with a ‘bare A-2′ may be unwilling to call 2 or 3 bets cold to stay in the pot - avoiding being quartered for the low.

In this case you should look to re-raise from early position - forcing your opponents to decide whether they are willing to pay 2-bets to see a flop. If the flop comes favorable to your hand then you may again be in a position to make it 2-bets to the field.

To summarize, raising before the flop in fixed-limit Omaha hi-lo poker games creates strategy issues at the lower buy-in levels, where the action is fast and loose.
